CAPE COD COMMUNITY COLLEGE HONORS 183 STUDENTS
AT EVENING OF EXCELLENCE WITH $250,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation announced $250,075 in awards to 183 students at the Evening of Excellence scholarship awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in the Tilden Arts Center Auditorium.

Scholarships from $500 to $4,000 were awarded to current, incoming, and graduating students.  The selections were based on academic excellence, accomplishments, and in some cases, financial need or personal circumstances.  Recipients ranged from students directly out of high school starting College in the fall, to high school students who participated in Dual Enrollment and already have college credit, to many returning students studying toward their degree, to students graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

The awards included 13 new scholarships presented for the first time.  Of specific interest were:  one in memory of the Foundation Chair who died this past year, the Laura L. Flanders Scholarship; one for a student from Falmouth, the Ruth Burrough Scholarship; one in honor of long-time Foundation Executive Director, the Natalie DuBois Scholarship; those in memory of friends of the College, the Christopher Lovelock and Phillip M. Hanly scholarships; and new awards for nursing, business, and economic program students.

Presentations were announced by Elizabeth M. Lewis, Chairperson of the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, and Susan Miller, Interim Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.  Professor Patricia McGraw, the 2009 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, was the honored faculty speaker.  Heidi Cappodona, Class of 2010, of Brewster, spoke on behalf of all the scholarship recipients expressing what scholarship assistance meant to them.

Since the formation of the Educational Foundation in 1983 as an independent non-profit organization, more than $5.3 million has been distributed to students as scholarships.  The scholarship program is a cornerstone of the Foundation's mission.  The Foundation raises more than $1 million annually to fund scholarships, improve College facilities, support innovative programs for students and faculty, and to promote the essential role the College provides to the Cape Cod and Islands community.

More about Funded Scholarships

A one-time student scholarship can be funded for as little as $500 through the CCCC Educational Foundation. A $500 scholarship funds an average three-credit course at the equivalent of $432, with small balance to defray textbook and/or course material expenses. Endowed scholarships continued in perpetuity can be established with a minimum $10,000 gift paid in one lump sum or over multiple payments. The Foundation makes the management of these awards easy and rewarding, taking into account donor wishes for individual scholarship recipient requirements.  Nearly 50 of the College Foundation's current scholarships are endowed at $10,000 or higher.

More about Student Financial Aid

Currently almost half of CCCC students receive some form of financial assistance for tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses.  As state funds decline during this economic downturn, student enrollment is on the rise.  Given the growing student population and financial need, the College Foundation continually seeks scholarship funding to help more qualified students achieve their educational goals over the coming years.
